Wednesday Evening

On my way to pick up Meghan, I marveled at my new level of maturity. My goal had been to go a whole day without calling Mace with a tip. I had held off on telling him that Giovanni lived in a typical quiet neighborhood with polite but nosy neighbors. In any case, Mace was probably busy navigating his way through all the soccer moms to figure out if any of them had killed Giovanni. I was proud that I’d made it all the way through the day so far without breaking my pledge.

Mrs. Kim had saved the day—and evening—again. Not only had she taken care of Buddy while I went to work, she was now watching both Megan and Buddy so I could go out with Meghan for the evening. I didn’t want to take advantage of Mrs. Kim’s kindness. If this RenFaire meeting hadn’t been practically police business, I wouldn’t have gone. For sure, Laney couldn’t return soon enough from her business trip. When my mother’s voice tickled in my ear, I promised to get Mrs. Kim a nice thank-you gift.

Although based on how much Mrs. Kim seemed to enjoy her time with the girls, perhaps that gift should be the opportunity to spend more time with them. Was it polite to repay someone for babysitting by offering more babysitting? What if that was the thing they wanted? I got annoyed yet again at the latest revelation of my parents’ failure to provide sufficient instruction in what would be considered polite under different circumstances. As usual, I’d have to wing it.

Work had been relatively uneventful. No gang members lurking around the building for the third day in a row. None that I saw, at any rate. By now, they must have given up and focused on something, or someone, else. Despite some brainstorming, I hadn’t made any meaningful progress on our Rover pilot project’s sticky issue, but at least I had avoided answering my boss’ questions on our status all day.

The only close call came when he strode down the hall earlier than normal for his daily management-by-walking-around stroll. Fortunately, I had set up a facial recognition camera app on an unused computer near his office to alert me when he was heading in my direction, giving me just enough time to scramble around the corner and down the stairway before he reached me. My working life had greatly improved ever since.

I shook my head in wonder again. Exercising self-restraint with Mace, thinking of thank-you gifts without being reminded, and working steadily without incident. My ex-wife would not believe how mature I’d become. I almost texted my kids to brag when the Rover arrived at Meghan’s house.
